CPN TO ACCREDIT THE COMPUTER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF HIGHER INSTITUTIONS IN NIGERIA

In the past, the Computer Professional Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN) has collaborated with NBTE on the accreditation of the Computer Science Departments of Polytechnics, Monotechnics and Colleges of Education. Recently, the Council has finally commenced an independent accreditation exercise of Computer Science Departments in Nigerian Universities.
 
The accreditation exercise is one of the core functions of the Council aimed at ensuring standard in the Information Technology education and practice in the country. Schedule 1, Section 4(2), Sub-Section 7(1) of Act 49 of 1993 states that “in order to carry out its responsibility under the Act, the Council shall accordingly set up standards expected of the Computer Training Institutions in the country and enforce the attainment of standard, Council will from time to time conduct accreditation visit to the institutions”
At CPN, accreditation of Information Technology education programmes means the establishment of a procedure of recognizing academic and professional programmes offered in Computer Training Institutes in Nigeria, for a level of performance, integrity and quality which entitle the Institutions to the confidence of the educational community, employers of labour and the general public.

The accreditation exercise commenced with the accreditation of the Computer Science Department of the University of Lagos on Wednesday 6th to Friday 8th July, 2011.Accreditation of the University of Ife took place on Monday 12th September to Friday 16th September. Also, the CPN accreditation team of CPN carried out the accreditation exercise of the Lagos State University from Monday 19th to Wednesday 21st September, 2011.

The accreditation exercise is ongoing and Council will accredit other Universities in due course
